🕰️ Llama-3.1-405B took 39 million GPU-hours to train, i.e. about 4.5 thousand years.

👴🏻 If they had needed all this time, we would have GPU stories from the time of Pharaoh 𓂀: "Alas, Lord of Two Lands, the shipment of counting-stones arriving from Cathay was lost to pirates, this shall delay the building of your computing temple by many moons "

🛠️ But instead, they just parallelized the training on 24k H100s, which made it take just a few months.
This required parallelizing across 4 dimensions: data, tensor, context, pipeline.
And it is infamously hard to do, making for bloated code repos that hold together only by magic.

🤏 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲! Instead of building mega-training codes, Hugging Face colleagues cooked in the other direction, towards tiny 4D parallelism libs. A team has built Nanotron, already widely used in industry.
And now a team releases Picotron, a radical approach to code 4D Parallelism in just a few hundred lines of code, a real engineering prowess, making it much easier to understand what's actually happening!

⚡ 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆, 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹:
Counting in MFU (Model FLOPs Utilization, how much the model actually uses all the compute potential), this lib reaches ~50% on SmolLM-1.7B model with 8 H100 GPUs, which is really close to what huge libs would reach. (Caution: the team is leading further benchmarks to verify this)

Having an incredible time at the Agents MCP Hackathon

The learning curve has been steep but absolutely rewarding - diving deep into Model Context Protocol (MCP), building intelligent agents, and exploring the latest in LLM capabilities. There's something magical about seeing these technologies come together in real-time applications.

Huge shoutout to the hackathon organizers and sponsors for providing generous API credits from top inference providers. It's removed all the barriers to experimentation and let us focus purely on innovation and creativity. This level of support really makes the difference between having an idea and actually bringing it to life.

I’m excited to share that I’ve completed the Hugging Face Agents Course and earned my certificate.

Over the past few months, I explored how to build intelligent, autonomous agents using cutting-edge tools like smolagents, LlamaIndex, and LangGraph. The course covered everything from the fundamentals of agents to advanced topics like fine-tuning for function-calling, observability, evaluation, and even agents in games.

Some key content included:

1. Introduction to AI Agents

2. Agentic RAG use cases

3. Multi-framework implementation: smolagents, LlamaIndex, and LangGraph

4. Building, testing, and certifying a complete agent project

This was a hands-on, practical experience that deepened my understanding of how to design reliable, tool-using LLM agents. Looking forward to leveraging these skills in real-world applications in healthcare, logistics, and beyond.

I've plotted the progress of AI agents on GAIA test set, and it seems they're headed to catch up with the human baseline in early 2026.

And that progress is still driven mostly by the improvement of base LLMs: progress would be even faster with fine-tuned agentic models.

Continuing my streak by releasing the Wikireading dataset: a large collection of scraped non-fiction books predominantly in Russian language.

- ~7B tokens, or ~28B characters, making it a great candidate for use in pretraining
