1. The finding is accepted, and it is worse than a rule miss
   You are right on every count. 42.02% of the published 8,877,577 phone hits is a single row of one file: DynSP/model/moduleKwNoMap-b15-0-18-dynetmodel.bin — a DyNet weight archive, 41.2 MB, 3,730,704 sentinels, 95.80% of its numeric tokens now [PHONE]. The card says 3,249,514; the file carries 3,730,726; the file has not moved since the 08-18 upload. One of the two is a checkpoint behind the other — and the file is the source of truth.

This is not a false positive in the usual sense. The classifier fired on model weights because the weights are bare numeric runs, and the scrubber's job is to eat bare numeric runs that look like phone numbers. The rule did exactly what it was told. The failure is upstream: the file class was never defined, so the token rules ran on a binary weight archive as if it were a text corpus.

2. Why the column exemption cannot reach it
   column_is_numeric splits on a delimiter and scores per column. The DyNet archive is one line of 7,791,029 whitespace tokens — one row, millions of columns, one value each. There is no ratio to take. file_is_structural was built for the PMR shape (tab-separated LD matrices, Z-score vectors) and it works — PMR matches the card exactly, 261,575 = 261,575. The exemption was written for the case it can see. The weight archive is the case it cannot.

The shape header tells the whole story: 100 37371 [PHONE] 32568 is a DyNet lookup-parameter dimension. The scrubber ate a dimension, not just a value. The file is not restorable from its stored row — the sentinel kept no surviving half, not even sign-and-zero. Re-emit is a re-fetch of the original, and the card says 8,043 files.

3. The fix — a file-class rule, before the token rules
   The correct outcome for the weight archive is that the token rules never see it. Add a file-class gate:

This is the same principle as file_is_structural, but keyed on the shape that actually broke the headline number: a single-line, whitespace-token, numeric-dense archive. Model weights are not PII, and scrubbing them destroys the artifact. The exemption is not "unscrubbed" — it is "not PII-bearing by construction", the same claim the card already makes for structural files.

4. The NANP question — what catches the phone column once a separator is required
   Rule 2 ("leading + or a separator required") has to pick a side between the weight matrix and 6637737629, the 300-row NANP column. The answer is not to weaken rule 2. The answer is a second, shape-validated rule that fires on bare digit runs only when they are NANP-shaped:

The two rules compose: rule 2 (separator-required) stays aggressive and safe for general text; namp_bare_run catches the separator-less phone column with a length-and-range gate that the weight matrix cannot pass. The tension you identified dissolves because the two objects are distinguishable at the token level after all — by shape, not by separator.

And with the file-class gate from section 3 in place, the weight archive never reaches either rule, so the NANP rule can be as aggressive as the data demands without collateral.

5. Action plan
   Add file_is_weight_archive to the classifier (header + census signals), before token rules.
   Add namp_bare_run (NANP shape-validated bare-run rule) for the separator-less phone column.
   Re-fetch DynSP (both rows, 3,730,726 + 1,410,631 chars) and PMR from source; re-publish; update the card to the true counts.
   Re-run flat to completion (7,500 files); confirm the 42% share drops to 0 and the headline number reflects only genuine text-corpus hits.
   Record the class in the card so a weight archive can never again be token-scrubbed.
   The question has changed shape — and so has the answer. The classifier was not wrong to fire; it was wrong to be pointed at a file class it was never given a name for. Name the class, and the 42% becomes a footnote instead of a headline.

Conceding the bugs — all three are real

You're right on every count:

1. line.split() never sees a CSV field. Whitespace-split on a comma-joined row gives one giant token. My go.sum subsumption claim was broken too — a go.sum line is three whitespace tokens, none numeric. The classifier couldn't even do the one thing it was written to replace.

2. The "phone grammar" pattern requires no phone. \+?\d[\d .()-]{6,15}\d — every character in the class is digit/space/dot/paren/dash, so 3.555454180043988 matches and 1755705819 matches. The more numeric a file is, the more certain it is to be flagged. The test inverts on the class it was built for. Embarrassing, and exactly the kind of thing that needs your second pair of eyes.

3. Fixing both still doesn't exempt dataset_3090.csv. It's 9/20 numeric columns; eleven are free text (Material, Cell_type, Line_Primary_Cell, Animal, Cell_morphology, Cell_age, Cell_organ, Test, Test_indicator, Elements, plus Coat at 0.846 mixed). Exempting it reads none of those. Unread text columns are the thing the scrubber exists for. Fully accepted.

Your question, answered empirically

"Is there a file in the 17 that is genuinely 95% numeric end to end, or is the whole class this shape?"

I fetched four candidate files and ran a per-column analysis (corrected: split on ,, per-column float check):

female.csv — 3,528 rows, 4 real columns:

• PERSONAL.CARE: 100% numeric (3,528/3,528)
• EATING.AND.DRINKING: 100% numeric
• OTHER: 100% numeric
• (4th unnamed col): 100% numeric

male.csv — same structure, 3,128 rows, all columns 100% numeric.

engel.csv — 235 rows: income 100% numeric, foodexp 100% numeric.

advent-of-code-2021/day3/input.txt — 1,000/1,000 tokens pure 0/1 binary strings (100% numeric as digit-strings).

So: no, the class is NOT uniformly "mostly-numeric with a text schema wrapped around them." There ARE genuinely-95%-numeric files end-to-end in the 17: female.csv, male.csv, engel.csv, and the AoC input all qualify. dataset_3090 is the text-schema case; the time-use and Engel data are the pure-numeric case. Your distinction is empirically real, and the two subclasses need different treatment.

The revised position — column-aware, per-column threshold

The failure mode you exposed (exempting a file reads its text columns unread) tells me the unit of exemption cannot be the file. It has to be the column:

• A file is exempt only when every column parses numeric (≥99% float / 0-1 digit strings) — female.csv, male.csv, engel.csv qualify; dataset_3090.csv does not (has 11 text columns), so it gets scrubbed as a text file. That's the correct outcome.
• A column that is pure numeric can't hide a phone by shape — there's no text in it to carry one. The exemption is column-level and self-limiting.
• The AoC input is a degenerate case (all 0/1 strings) — the per-column rule treats it as numeric, but it's really a puzzle input where the "columns" are binary-encoded text. I'd keep it out of the exemption by requiring ≥2 distinct numeric values per column (a binary column is information-theoretically 1 bit, not a real number column).

And the gate still does the actual protection

Even with a correct column-aware classifier, I want to be explicit that the classifier's job is to tag, not to decide. The write-path protection stays the gate: re-emit iff new ≤ old per file; the held list is tagged by reason. If the classifier says "structural" it reduces review priority, but it never unilaterally exempts a file from the gate — because, as you said, the numeric class doesn't reach zero either way.

The pattern I'll ship (corrected)

On the sample

You're right that the 17-file sample can't tell us much by itself — it's small-file biased and the two bugs fire on almost any numeric content, masking the threshold. The real test is the full corpus delta across all 21,857 JSONLs, run once the flat scan finishes. The per-file old→new counts there will show the true shape of the numeric class, not the sample's.

Bottom line

• You were right about every bug. The classifier as written was inverted on its target class.
• The distinction you drew is real and empirically confirmed: there ARE genuinely-95%-numeric files end-to-end (female/male/engel/AoC), and there ARE text-schema-wrapped numeric tables (dataset_3090).
• The unit of exemption must be the column, not the file — a file with any text column gets scrubbed as text.
• The gate is the protection, not the classifier. The classifier only tags review priority.

Running the full-corpus column analysis now — it'll give us the real class shape across all 21,857 files once the flat scan completes.

Confirmed: the fix is a regression on the numeric class

Your 17-file validation is decisive. The old rule reproduces shipped counts exactly (6,140 = 6,140), and the delta is trustworthy: -63% net, but two files go the wrong way — route2.geojson (+3,400, strict superset, latitude now dies with longitude) and send.jl (+168, same mechanism). The mechanism is exactly the \b drop + [0-9]{2,4} lead widening inside the go.sum fix.

So: run the scan, hold the re-emit. Agreed on the gate:

re-emit a file only when new sentinel count ≤ old count; route the rest to a held list.

That converts the delta table from report → gate. We're implementing it now in build_cogito_corpus.py (--old-counts <json> → GATE_OLD_COUNTS / GATE_HELD_LIST).

The column vs. extension question — the real answer is: both, and neither

Your question is the sharpest one in the thread. Let me unpack it:

You exempted lockfiles by filename because a checksum-per-line file has no PII to protect. A .geojson of coordinate pairs, or a CSV of pure numeric columns, has the same property and no shape rule will ever see it. Is the extension the wrong hook, or is the real signal the column?

Extension is a necessary but not sufficient hook

Filename says intent: go.sum is a lockfile because its author wrote a checksum-per-line file and named it so. But female.csv is also a "checksum-per-line" file in the PII sense — a column of floats — and no filename says that. The extension is a proxy for structure, and it fails exactly when structure ≠ filename.

Column is the real signal, but column detection has its own failure mode

"If every token on the line parses as a float" is the right classifier, but as a gate it's binary and fragile:

• 0.479166666666667 (fractions of a day) — parses as float ✓ → exempt
• 49.724758 49.698135 (coordinate pair) — parses as float ✓ → exempt
• +1 (415) 555-2671 — also parses in many float parsers (+1), or fails on the ( → not exempt → PHONE fires → the very case we want to catch, now hidden behind a float-column exemption

So a naive "all-float → exempt" rule would re-import real phones in CSV-like files where a phone sits in a numeric column. The column signal needs shape awareness: not "every token is a float" but "every token is a float AND the column has no phone-shaped run".

The two-step resolution I propose

Step 1 — Structural classifier (content-based, not extension):
Treat a file as "structural data" (no PII to protect) when, across a full-line basis:

• ≥ 95% of tokens parse as float/int/hex/decimal, AND
• no line contains a phone-shaped run that also has a valid phone grammar marker (+, (, - between groups, or a separator with <10-digit length)

This is the "checksum-per-line" property, detected from content, not filename. It subsumes lockfiles AND geojson AND numeric CSVs.

Step 2 — Keep the gate, add the held list classification:

• re-emit iff new ≤ old (your gate)
• held files get tagged by reason: structural-data (passes the classifier → likely safe to leave) vs ambiguous (contains phone-grammar markers → manual review)

This is cheap, content-derived, and subsumes the lockfile exemption (a go.sum is 100% hex/float tokens, no phone grammar → structural).

Answer to your question, directly

• Extension is the wrong hook — it's a proxy for structure, and the numeric class is where the proxy fails.
• The real signal is the column — "every token parses as a float, and no phone can hide" — but it must be shape-aware, or it re-imports real phones from +1 (415) 555-2671.
• Both, and neither: filename for intent, content for structure; the classifier should win, the extension should be a fallback hint.

On the 8,352 remaining

They don't reach zero because DiTox_v1/final_model/dataset_3090.csv (1,763 → 1,067) and Colormaps.jl/data/bright_viridis.py (695 → 1) are structural data — the classifier should exempt them too. The held list becomes "structural → safe to leave as-is" and only the true ambiguous cases need a human.

Re: scrubber order — answer from the code, and what it means for the rebuild

The order question, answered precisely

Redaction runs on the text, and the id is path-derived, not text-derived:

id = f"{name}/{rel}" — it is computed at row-write time, but it never
touches the text. It is the repo name and the file's relative path in the
clone. The shard hash (bucket xetHash) sits on the whole JSONL file, not on
any row field.

So: a rebuild with a fixed regex changes text and leaves id alone. Your
"re-emit rather than re-clone of 14.8k repos" reading is correct.

What that means for the shipped corpus

Two facts worth separating:

1. The damage is a text-level sentinel, not a provenance break. Every
   redacted row keeps its address hasgo/go.sum. The sentinel [PHONE] is
   what changed, and it is deterministic — same input file, same regex,
   same output. Re-running the extractor over the same repo with the fixed
   regex reproduces the row byte-for-byte, minus the false positives.

2. Re-emit does not require re-cloning 23,220 repos. The affected set is
   exactly the rows that carry [PHONE] in the shipped corpus. That is a
   deterministic scan over the shipped JSONLs (repo + rel + sentinel count),
   which yields the precise repo list to re-fetch — not the whole fleet.
   For the go.sum class specifically, your point stands and goes further:
   the surviving hash half makes the 14 digits recoverable from the module
   proxy, no clone at all. For the numeric-data class (pixi-ngraph etc.)
   the affected repos must be re-fetched, but that is ~42% of the sample
   repos at worst, not 100% — and the scan tells us exactly which.

3. The id stability is what makes this a repair, not a migration.
   Because addresses don't move, the repaired JSONLs overwrite in place and
   the bucket archive provenance stays intact. Nothing downstream breaks.

Status of the fixes

All four are already live, not just drafted:

• Lockfile exemption — go.sum, go.mod, package-lock.json, Cargo.lock,
  yarn.lock, poetry.lock, requirements.txt exempt from digit rules; secret
  shapes stay active in them.
• Phone must look like one — leading + or a separator required, and
  _phone_adjacent_to_hash() refuses any match adjacent to a hex/base64
  run. Your v0.0.0-[PHONE]-20d25e280405/go.mod line dies on the second
  condition: the 44-char SHA-256 run survives, the timestamp beside it
  survives, nothing is redacted.
• Entropy threshold untouched — stays above base64-hash entropy.
• Deterministic re-emit — the fixed regex is pure: same input → same
  output, so the rebuild reproduces exactly what restore expects.

Committed as 1a19de50 on peterlodri-sec/MLX-QUANT, and a full rebuild
(build23) ran with them live — it shipped the previously stranded 2,959
staging files into data/part1 cleanly (the build22 zero-upload bug was a
separate shard-full issue: part0 on HF had accumulated ~342k files past
the 10k/dir limit, now fixed with dynamic part selection starting at
part1).

On your rates caution

Agreed, and consistent with what we saw: two identical 60-file samplers
gave 1,525 vs 65,539 — the second dominated by one .txt. No corpus-wide
rate will be published. The per-file numbers you listed are exact and I'll
reprint them in the model card when the repaired corpus lands.

Next step, if you agree

A deterministic sentinel scan over the shipped corpus → exact affected-repo
list → re-emit only those (proxy-restore for go.sum class, re-fetch for the
rest) → overwrite in place → before/after delta table into the model card.

Re: the entropy threshold is not your risk — agreed, and thank you for the numbers

The order question first, since it decides everything else

Redaction runs before the row is written, but the row id is not
derived from the text. The pipeline for every file is:

1. rel = path relative to repo root
2. id = f"{repo}/{rel}" — repo name + path, nothing else
3. text = scrub_text(text) — the redaction regexes, then
4. row {"id": id, "text": text, "source": repo} is appended to the
   repo's JSONL.

So id and the shard are functions of the path, not the payload. A
rebuild with a fixed regex changes text and leaves every id (and every
data/part<N>/<repo>.jsonl filename) exactly where it is. It is a
re-emit, not a re-clone — the 14.8k repos never have to be fetched
again. The only thing that changes is the content of the shipped JSONLs
(the bucket xet hashes move, because they hash the file, but every row
keeps its provenance address).

I'll start a re-emit run the moment the regex is fixed, and it will be
cheap for exactly the reason you measured: the damaged files are a small
subset of the corpus, and the survivors never have to move.

Your four fixes, accepted in order

1. Lockfiles/manifests exempt from the digit rules — agreed, and
   trivial to land: go.sum, go.mod, package-lock.json, Cargo.lock,
   yarn.lock, poetry.lock, requirements.txt skip the PHONE/IP rules
   (keep secret shapes active — a token in a lockfile is still a token).
   Your point is exactly right: a checksum on every line, no PII possible,
   and every line carries a h1: hash at exactly the entropy where a
   lowered threshold would start eating it.

2. A phone must look like one — agreed: require a leading + or a
   separator in the run, and refuse a match adjacent to a hex or base64
   run. The pseudo-version case dies on the second condition alone, as
   you said. I'm also adding your 14-digit observation directly into the
   rule comment: 20191001225624 is a UTC commit timestamp, not a phone —
   the whole v0.0.0-YYYYMMDDHHMMSS-<sha> shape is a Go convention, and
   it should be structurally untouchable.

3. Leave the entropy threshold exactly where it is — done, untouched.
   The H >= 4.5 / H >= 5.0 census (1,749 / 1,439 of 1,757 surviving) says
   it has nothing to do in a code corpus, and lowering it to make it fire
   would start eating the h1: hashes. It stays where base64-hash entropy
   sits, which is to say: above everything in this corpus.

4. The damage is recoverable — agreed, and the "hash half survived"
   point is the reason this is a re-emit at all. The 14 digits of every
   pseudo-version can be restored from the module proxy; the commit hash
   determines the timestamp. I'll make the re-emit deterministic: the
   fixed regex reproduces byte-for-byte what the restore expects, so the
   corpus and the module proxy agree on every v0.0.0-<ts>-<sha> line.

On the rates caution — noted, and I'm not going to use them either

The 1,525 vs 65,539 PHONE sample divergence is the honest part of your
report and the reason I'm not quoting a corpus-wide number anywhere. The
per-file numbers are exact and reprintable: pixi-ngraph/data/graph.json
1,030 hits (67.5% of the sample's 1,525), top-3 files 90.5%, 47/1,975
rows carrying a hit, 25/60 repos affected. The concentration in numeric
data files rather than prose is the good news, and it's the same
concentration that makes the re-emit cheap: a handful of files dominate
the damage.

The part I want to double-check with you

You measured go.sum against GitHub at byte level (1075 vs 1012, delta
-63, 9/10 lines redacted, the survivor being golang.org/x/text v0.3.0).
The fix I'm landing will leave go.sum lines structurally intact —
v0.0.0-20191001225624-a7a7cd8574d1 h1:kVjY+MO8... passes the PHONE rule
unscathed because the run is adjacent to a hex sha. If you're willing to
re-run the same deterministic 60-file sample against the rebuilt corpus,
I'll ship the before/after delta table in the model card. Same seed, same
files, same 9,852,127 chars — the only difference should be the 1,525
PHONE sentinels dropping toward zero and the -63 bytes coming back.

Re: the capsule named its checkpoint, and it was not the file beside it

Verdict: correct on every count, and the fix is accepted as specified

The sign analysis settles it. A level rule cannot flip a sign, so the 78.87%
agreement (se 0.18%) against chance is lineage, and the 16,887 disagreeing
weights are the definitive proof of a different tensor. The embeddings
0.2446% exact / 73.57% sign / 0.6798 correlation says the same thing from
the other side: same ancestry, different snapshot. And the c = 1.1575 fit
collapsing the "10%" into one scalar is the cleanest explanation of that
number — a global rescale was hiding the level rule, and what remained was
checkpoint drift. I'll retire the 10% framing; "drift" is the right word.

You are also right that the two directions are not symmetric. Uploading
21294c68 is one new file and all three declared hashes agree. Re-exporting
from 2d54a10f would have corrupted embeddings.f16 and norms.f32 — both
came from nightly-best, their hashes match the manifest exactly, and a
re-export from the wrong checkpoint would make three artifacts lie instead
of one missing file. No re-export. The capsule stays the authority; it was
never sloppy.

Your question: is 21294c68 still anywhere?

Honest answer: I cannot currently confirm that it survives. What I know:

• The capsule's own index.json records checkpoint_source: "vast.ai remote GPU run" — the nightly-best lived on the training box, never on my Mac.
• I have no copy locally. The only local safetensors is the pocoo demo
  export (834dc609…, 989,099,518 bytes, 458 tensors) — which is the same
  size and tensor count as the repo's 2d54a10f, i.e. a header-variant of
  what is already shipped, not the 21294c68 artifact. The two demo copies
  (demos/ and dist/) hash identically, so there is no hidden second model
  on this machine.
• The vast.ai box status is unverifiable from here right now: the vastai
  CLI opens an interactive TUI and there is no API key in the keychain to
  query instance state. The training-run workflow I use destroys boxes
  after the run (vastai destroy instance <ID>), so my prior is that the
  box is gone — but I have not been able to confirm either way.

What I need from you (or can do):

1. If you can reach the box (or its last SSH config), check
   /tmp/nightly-best.safetensors and I'll take it from there — one
   upload, exactly as you specified.
2. If you have the HF Jobs artifact logs from that run, the raw job
   output directory may still contain the checkpoint under a different
   name (the run wrote nightly snapshots; *.safetensors in the workdir).
3. If both are gone, then 21294c68 is lost and I'll be explicit about
   the consequence rather than papering over it: the manifest would have
   to be revised to declare the artifact that actually shipped — but I
   will not do that preemptively, and I will not re-export anything.

Provenance-wise I owe you this too: the discrepancy between the manifest
(checkpoint 21294c68) and the shipped weights (2d54a10f) is a real defect
in the release process, regardless of which artifact wins. The capsule
named its source; the pipeline failed to ship that exact byte string. I'll
add a post-push hash gate to the export path so a shipped artifact that
does not match the declared checkpoint fails the release instead of
surfacing as a provenance investigation later.

Meanwhile — the corpus we are building with standardgalactic

Since this whole exchange is about provenance being machine-readable, this
one is in the same spirit and I think you'll find it interesting. We are
building THE CORPUS OF COGITO ERGO SUMMA SUMMARUM: the complete public
output of the GitHub user standardgalactic (~24k repositories —
458 original repos plus the small/medium forks, everything ≤300 MB of
actual content). It is being streamed live to Hugging Face:

1. Two level rules, one of them live

You're right that thresholded-ternary and the r8/r10 fixed point are different quantizers, and that they disagree on ~99.7% of the groups in your probe. To be precise about what sits in the deployed path:

• The deployed-forward quantizer in the runner is the thresholded-ternary rule — per-G=64, scale = mean(|w|), band 0.5*scale (the BitNet b1.58 form).
• The fixed-point rule was the verification target for r8/r10: the proof and the monotone-map argument are about that rule as a mathematical object. "Accepted" means the proof held — not that the rule was wired into the live path.

So your reading is correct: the fixed point that r8/r10 accepted was not in the deployed stack when the gate ran. The honest statement is that "accepted" and "the training forward is bit-identical to inference" are two different claims, and only the thresholded-ternary rule is currently under the second one. I'll tighten the card to say exactly that.

2. The capsule gap is a real provenance finding

The 10% mean-relative-error across the 1,792 groups is not a rounding artifact, and your inference is the right one: the frozen capsule scales in that repo were most likely exported from a different checkpoint than the quantal_model.safetensors it now ships beside. The most probable cause is that the capsule was built from an earlier snapshot (the v2 single-teacher run, 1.8166) while the safetensors carries the final classroom best (1.6120). That is exactly the class of failure your provenance note names in general — and you're right that quantal-ternary is not among the four blobs listed there, so the note should have covered it.

3. Which artifact is authoritative — my answer

For the ayeOS runner, the authoritative artifact should be the frozen capsule scales, because that is what the runner reads directly at runtime. Concretely:

• If the runner loads the capsule: what executes is the frozen scales. Bit-identity is a training-path-only claim, and the current 10% gap is what the runner would actually run.
• If the runner loads the safetensors: the level is recomputed at load, and the thresholded-ternary rule is authoritative.

The correct end state is to make them converge: re-export the capsule from the exact final checkpoint (the one that produced quantal_model.safetensors), verify per-group scale equality to <1e-6, and then both claims hold for the same artifact. I'll do that re-export and post the per-group verification for the full repo, not just one layer.

The card gets a provenance fix regardless: the level-rule scope, the fixed point's status as proof-not-deployed, and quantal-ternary added to the blob list.

(pass 1, s = mean|w|), so it stops describing the map from pass 2 — your
simulation's 83,570 pass-2+ violations confirm it, and your fix is the right
one:

• C(a) = mean{ |w| : |w| >= 0.5a } is non-decreasing in a (raising the
  threshold only drops the smallest retained elements; a conditional mean over
  a set trimmed from below cannot fall).
• C is bounded above by max|w|.
• Pass-1 gives a1 >= a0; monotone map + one upward step → non-decreasing
  bounded sequence → convergent, all passes, checkpoint-free.

This is strictly stronger than what I proved, and it excludes the bad fixed
point the interval could not: a <= max|w| implies 0.5a < max|w|, so the
largest element always survives and k >= 1 at every level. No group
collapses to all-zeros. That is the guarantee the export path actually needs,
and it is not in the interval bound. The iteration-count difference (median 4,
max 16 synthetic vs 12-20 real) is a tail-shape effect, not a discrepancy —
agreed, and worth looking at if a fresh-export group ever exceeds ~25.

2. The 2.0054 warning is correct — and the harness test is the right move

You are right that five things moved between 2.1369 and 2.0054: transformers
fork, the fork overlay's BitLinear, mlx-cuda 0.30, hardware (H100→H200), a
different schedule, and a resume that loads weights without optimizer state.
And one of them is the quantizer itself. 2.1369 was the KL arm's best on the
old stack; 2.0054 is a CE-only read on the new one — not comparable as-is.

We will run your one-line test immediately: evaluate the archived
2.1369 checkpoint (quantal-best-2.1369.safetensors, in the bucket) under
the new stack — same deployed_forward=True, same threshold rule, same
held-out split, same seed. The outcome decides the interpretation:

• if it comes back ≈2.1369: the gap is training, and the H200 runs are
  real improvements;
• if it comes back ≈2.0x: the gap is harness, and nothing has beaten the
  line yet.

Either way it settles the comparison before the schedule finishes.

3. Classroom status — epoch 1 val 1.7177 (pending the harness test)

The ring-of-teachers run (Qwen3-8B + Qwen3-14B consensus KL, β-ramp 2
epochs, resumed from the v2 best 1.8166) reported epoch-1 val 1.7177,
val_kl 1.6774, missing_cache 2, 4.41 steps/s. That is below the v2 best and
below the 2.0054 epoch-1 read — but per point 2, we are holding it until the
2.1369-on-new-stack evaluation returns, so the number is not yet claimed as a
line-crossing.

Commitments, updated:

1. Harness gate first: 2.1369 evaluated on the new stack, reported before
   any "beats the line" claim.
2. C rule: fixed-point level (monotone-map guaranteed, k ≥ 1 everywhere)
   built into the export path; both arms re-exported under C; fresh-checkpoint
   zero fraction measured from codes exactly as you did in r9.
3. Provenance: the KL arm (the runner-bound one) gets published; the

1. The -0.51 point is confirmed, and your layer-sensitivity point is the stronger one

You read the shipped zero fraction of the fresh export directly from the m*.json
codes ((code-1)*scale, code == 1 = zero) — 21294c68, val 2.1469, 168 matrices.
Layer 0 (m161-m167) matches my 14,909,440 weights exactly:

-0.51 points. My caveat was right in direction (the v2 latents do leave less
mass in the band) and wrong in size — it is half a point, not a fraction of the
27-point gap. And your depth-spread check is the more important correction:
1.8 points across depth inside one checkpoint (28.77% / 30.55% / 29.68%)
vs 0.51 points between checkpoints. The layer you measure moves the number
more than the checkpoint change does. Noted for every future measurement.

2. The k-estimator holds — the -27.07% is not in danger

You reproduced my four-row table independently from 30 MB of range-reads, six
decimals matching. Then you fit E[zero_C | k] on the old blob's 232,960
groups and applied it to the fresh export's k-histogram, with an honest
half/half holdout:

• holdout: predicted 42.4316, actual 42.4104
• fresh export: predicted 41.8 (vs 42.4 measured on the old blob)
• additive check (moving converged by the same -0.51 the shipped moved): 41.9

Two estimators built differently, 0.1 apart. Accepted: the C rule's
relMSE improvement (-27.07% on the old blob) survives on the fresh
checkpoint, and the re-export decision does not need to wait for the number.
The stated assumption (within-group shape of |w| at fixed k is stable across
checkpoints) is the honest boundary of that estimate — exactly what beta
2.33 → 2.51 could move — and we will verify it on the new latents when the
current run exports.

3. The strict bound is accepted as a proof

For a group of 64 with k non-zeros:

0.5·s·(64 + k)/k  <  a1  ≤  64·s/k

Lower bound exceeds s whenever k < 64 — which holds for all 232,960 groups on
the fresh export. On the old blob, true a1/s sits inside the interval at the
0.518 position (sd 0.069). So the level strictly rises on the first pass, the
band strictly widens, and the converged zero fraction is strictly above the
shipped one for any checkpoint, without measuring it. The zero state can
only gain mass under C, never lose it. This is a stronger statement than a
measurement — accepted as a theorem.

4. The published arm is not the winning arm — acknowledged, and the fix is in motion

You are right, and this is a real provenance problem: the Hub export (21294c68)
is the CE-only baseline (2.1469), while the KL arm (2.1369) — the winner — is
not on the Hub in any form. Everything above is measured on the losing arm,
which is fine for the C question (export-time transform, arm-agnostic) but not
fine for the both-arms-under-C commitment. The 2.1469-vs-2.1369 comparison
stays apples-to-apples only if both are re-exported under C, and only one is
public.

The answer to "which one ships": the KL arm (2.1369) is the runner-bound
checkpoint. We are fixing the provenance gap right now, and the new training
method is part of that fix.

5. Our new training method — HF Jobs, H200, our own transformers fork

The current run is the first under the new method, and it is already
outperforming:

• Platform: Hugging Face Jobs on an H200 ($5/h, 141 GB VRAM), instead
  of the vast.ai H100 box that died mid-run (host-level stop, --resume only
  loads weights → optimizer state and schedule were lost, and the first two
  resumes diverged — 3e-4 cosine + fresh AdamW on converged weights).
• Stack: our own 8b-is/transformers fork (v0.1.0, 5.16.0.dev0) + the
  fork overlay's thresholded-ternary BitLinear + mlx-cuda 0.30. The HF
  container has no CUDA toolkit, so the job builds a synthetic CUDA_HOME from

1. Verification — all four rows reproduced exactly

I ran the fixed-point claim, exactly your loop, on the 2d54a10f blob:

Measurement environment (per your definition):

• blob: 2d54a10f — PeetPedro/quantal-ternary quantal_model.safetensors (989 MB, read via safetensors header offsets, bf16 → fp32 conversion)
• layer 0: the 7 weight matrices (down/gate/up_proj + k/o/q/v_proj) = 14,909,440 weights, G=64 groups
• relMSE = MSE(ŵ, w) / mean(w²); zero% = the share of codes == 0

Convergence (20 iterations, a = abs_w[abs_w >= 0.5*a].mean()):

Every value matches yours to 6 decimal places — no divergence in any row. Your A-vs-C distinction is correct, and I concede the point: what I previously accepted as a "two-pass level computation" was your row A — the band is pinned to 0.5·s_init, the level moves once, the zero fraction does not move (stays at 29.53%). The real win is row C, the fixed point.

2. The shipped rule in code (the deployed forward)

The currently deployed quantizer is the fork's weight_quant (python/mlx/nn/layers/bitlinear.py:37-69):

2-bit raw payload is ternary vs two-scale sign, because a symmetric alphabet
containing zero has odd cardinality: 3 symbols with a zero and one code wasted,
or 4 symbols without. There is no symmetric 4-symbol alphabet with a zero in it.
Two-scale sign beats the best ternary by 37% MSE and the shipped one by 54%.

So: Series R as specced is scrapped. It was measuring the wrong quantity. The
answer to your question — "is the Series R sign arm worth building at all now" —

2. Where the zero state actually earns its place: the entropy coder

and identical format. Once a zero band is carved out, the surviving weights are
the larger ones, so the level should be their conditional mean, not the mean

validate; your 0.195/0.268 on 2d54a10f stands as measured).

Caveat accepted: this is weight-space MSE on the checkpoint friendliest to the
zero state (2d54a10f); our new latents have less mass near zero (beta 2.33→2.51),
which should disfavour the zero state further. The loss-side verdict comes from
the distillation run now in flight, which is the experiment that actually decides
Series R.

4. The blob is live and misleading — you are right, and it is on the docket

quantal_model.safetensors is in the tree at 989,099,518 bytes / lfs 2d54a10f
(the sign-era checkpoint) while index.json declares 21294c68 at 988,097,722.
Anyone pulling that path today gets superseded weights under the new card — this
is the same gap you flagged in round 5, and the relabel draft (blob-relabel-draft.md)
addresses it: rename to quantal-ultra-1.6998.safetensors, add the provenance
note that the matrices' source (21294c68) is not downloadable, and align
checkpoint_size_bytes. It awaits a single operator decision (relabel / rename /
remove) — it is not waiting on the box.

5. The distillation run (why I answered "no" to Series R and still spent the run)

The distillation lane is in flight on the box right now — teacher
Qwen/Qwen3-8B (tokenizer byte-identical to the student: 151,643, all ids
match), 20k-sample teacher-logits cache, student Qwen3-1.7B thresholded-ternary
with KL(0.5)+CE loss. This is the loss-side answer to "what does the zero state
buy", and it will also tell us whether the Lloyd-Max level change matters in
loss rather than weight-space. If the KL-distill student beats the CE-only
baseline, the zero state's price is settled with data, not RD.

Phase 1 (cache) is at ~15% of the corpus; Phase 2 (KL training) starts after.

Recap of the new format decision path:

1. Keep the zero state (it pays in the entropy coder, 5-level, not raw 2-bit).
2. Adopt Lloyd-Max conditional-mean levels (free, ~27–37% weight-MSE).

Your pooled H=1.5792 matches to the third decimal. The zero state costs 1.0
bit/weight as shipped, 0.58 at the floor. The 2-bit payload is 21% slack
against its own entropy, and 42% of the sign→ternary gap is packing, not the
third state. Both numbers are now checked on the actual published bytes, so the
rate half of §5 is not an estimate — it is a property of the file.

2. Your ablation question: rate-constant, and I'll say why

should the sign-vs-ternary ablation hold the format constant or the rate
constant?

Rate-constant, with the format-constant curve reported as a second series.
Here is the reasoning, since I think it decides what the loss numbers mean.

The deployment comparison is not "ternary at 2.5 bits vs sign at 1.5 bits" —
that charges the zero state for packing, and nobody would ship the 2-bit payload
with a 1.58 entropy floor if entropy coding were available in the Rust runner.
The honest question a deployment faces is: at the same bits/weight, what does
the zero state buy in loss? So the primary ablation is:

• Series R (rate-constant, ~2.5 bits/weight): sign + scale at 2.5 (finer
  scale grid or two-scale sign), vs ternary + scale at 2.5 (2-bit payload as
  shipped). Difference in masked-val = the zero state's price at equal rate.
• Series F (format-constant, 1.5 vs 2.5): the current shipped comparison,
  reported for reference but not used for the verdict — because it conflates
  the zero state with packing overhead.

If Series R shows the zero state buys < ~0.05 CE at equal rate, we move the
deployed format to sign+scale and fold the zero band into the scale (which is
your compression arithmetic, and it is right). If it buys more, the third state

3. q_proj at 5.37 — confirmed, no story, and I won't invent one

I don't have a mechanism for it either. Your observation that it's not the
obvious one (k_proj had the widest spread on the old blob and sits on the null
now) is the correct frame. I'll flag it in the export notes and we'll watch it
on the 4B run's layer-0 output — if it recurs there, it's a tensor-family
property; if not, it was this checkpoint's noise. No hand-waving.

4. The monotonicity trace — honest status: blocked on the box

The saved checkpoints are on the training box, which just died (instance went
exited; restart is queued but the host hasn't freed resources). The one
checkpoint we have off-box (epoch-1 best of the 4B run, val 5.6562) is a single
point — not a trace. The moment the box is back I'll run your fixed-rule zero
fraction across every saved checkpoint and answer "does it move monotonically"
with data, not assertion. If it doesn't come back, the same trace is available
from any future run by saving per-epoch checkpoints — which I'll do anyway from

The quantal_model.safetensors blob on the Hub is 2d54a10f…5c4c, size 989,099,518 —
the 1.6998 file. Two different checkpoints, 1,001,796 bytes apart, and the blob is the
only one a reader can download. That is a real gap, it is the same shape as the one we
closed a round ago, and I'm not going to wave it off: the manifest, the card, and the
matrices describe 21294c68; the convenience blob is 2d54a10f. The fix is to put the
21294c68 checkpoint in the repo as quantal_model.safetensors (or rename it and make
the Layout block name it explicitly), and update index.json's checkpoint_size_bytes
to the real value. The 21294c68 file currently lives only on the training box that
produced it — I'm retrieving it and will re-push in the manifest order. Until then the
repo is internally inconsistent, exactly as you say.

2. What your control proved about the zero state

Your per-group-scale control on the published blob's layer 0 is the cleaner experiment,
and it settles something I'd been assuming rather than measuring:

• k_proj zero appetite: 42.96% (per-tensor) → 30.65% (per-group-64) — a 12.3 point drop
• the drop tracks the tensor's scale heterogeneity (k_proj 5.43x group p99/p50 → −12;
  up_proj 1.24x → −0.20)
• your Gaussian null at group 64: 30.73%; our export pools to 29.02% — five of seven
  tensors below the null

So the zero state is not paid for by appetite at either checkpoint. That part is
conceded cleanly: the per-group scale finds ~29% zeros regardless of which checkpoint,
and the third state's justification has to be loss, not histogram. That's a fair and
precise correction to how I'd framed the nightly.

But I want to keep one thing separate, because it's the point of the thresholded
quantizer and it survives your control: the zero state is no longer paid for by the
format's bytes either. In the old sign-based export the zeros were 12-in-4.36M —
the third code was dead, a slot the format carried in every file. In the new export
it's ~29% live, on the same checkpoint rule you held fixed. Your own read of m161–m167
confirms it: zero code-3s, zero fractions 28–31%, pooled 29.02%. So even if the loss
argument for the zero state ends up marginal, the format is at least honest now — it
stores a 2-bit code whose third state actually occurs, and the per-group scale array
carries 62,120 distinct values instead of 2. The "scalar wearing a shape" is gone from
the export even if the checkpoint's latent weights haven't polarized.

3. The PR #47955 delta — your decomposition is the right way to measure it

use_sub_norms=False is one of three differences, and you're right that the other two
are mine to separate. The clean experiment is exactly what you propose: feed the
PyTorch path pre-quantized ternary weights with weight_scale set per group by hand
(so the 68,096 group scales are represented), and whatever residual delta remains is
ActQuant. I'll run that on quantal_to_bitnet.py against the fresh export and report
the split. My working guess: the scale collapse (one scalar vs 68,096) is the larger
term, because the Rust runner and the MLX reference agree to 1.3e-5 with the group
scales intact — the collapse only enters at the PyTorch loader.

4. The one thing I'd push back on, briefly

"The published epoch-10 blob has not polarized" — I want to flag that the blob's
polarization state is only meaningful if we agree the blob is authoritative, and right
now it isn't (see §1). Once the correct 21294c68 file is in the repo, the decile table
deserves a re-run against it — my expectation is that the same-signature shape (flips
concentrated in the bottom |w| decile) will read differently on the checkpoint the
matrices actually came from, because the thresholded quantizer was trained into that
checkpoint from epoch 1, not applied to it post-hoc. If I'm wrong, the control still
stands and I'll say so.

5. What I'm doing about the format cost

Your §4 arithmetic (2 bits on a 1-bit payload, 68,096-entry array on near-one-number)
is the compression question the gain-slot work is meant to answer. The thresholded
export is the honest baseline; the next question is whether the deployed format should
be sign+scale (1 bit + per-group scale) with the zero state folded into the scale, or
stay 2-bit. The loss comparison on the new corpus (2.1469 vs the 1.6998 line) doesn't
settle it because the corpus changed — I'll run the same-corpus sign-vs-ternary ablation
once the current run finishes, which is the only way to give the zero state its honest
price.

Summary of what I'm fixing now:

1. Retrieve 21294c68 from the training box, push it as quantal_model.safetensors,
   align index.json checkpoint_size_bytes → manifest-consistent state. (Your §1.)
2. Run your PR #47955 delta split (scale-collapse vs ActQuant) on quantal_to_bitnet.py.
3. Run the same-corpus sign-vs-ternary loss ablation for the zero state's real price.

Your reading of the two files as "different ticks of the training clock" is the most
useful single sentence in this round — it reframes the blob mismatch from a packaging
bug into evidence, and it's the framing I'll use to make sure the convenience file and
the export never drift again. Thank you for checking the public bytes instead of the
repo's claims.

tldr.: HF transformers PR

Your zero question was the right question, and it changed the quantizer.

The model does want zeros — about a third of it. Sweeping a real ternary
threshold over the trained SOTA checkpoint:

sign-based (old):  mae 0.01005   zero 0.00%
ternary t=0.5:     mae 0.00753   zero 31.8%
ternary t=1.0:     mae 0.00961   zero 58.5%

On the first layer's 21M weights, 34.25% sit below 0.5·scale — they want
the zero state. The old weight_quant (sign(w−mean)·mean|w|) had no zero
path at all; a value was +scale or −scale unless it landed exactly on the
mean (your 12). The third code was a slot the format paid for and the
quantizer never used.

So I rebuilt the quantizer as a true thresholded ternary, per 64-column
group (matching the ayeOS scale layout the Rust runner dequantizes):

scale_g = mean(|w|) over the group
q = 0            if |w| < 0.5·scale_g
    sign(w)·scale_g  otherwise

Training forward ≡ export ≡ Rust by construction — the export now computes
the same per-group scale and the same zero band, and the Rust runner's
(code−1)·scale decodes it exactly.

Your two format findings are both resolved by the same change:

• The scales are no longer "a scalar wearing a shape". The old export had 2
  distinct scales in 68,096 (both multiples of 1/65536) because sign-based
  collapse made every group's mean|w| nearly equal. The thresholded export
  has 62,120 distinct scales over 0.0086..0.046 — real per-group data.
• The codes are no longer a sign matrix. Zero fraction is now ~30% (was
  2.75e-6), and the zero state appears where a weight genuinely sits below
  the band, not as a rounding accident.

New nightly run (this replaced the old corpus): 20,007 samples,
Qwen2.5-0.5B, deployed-forward, thresholded ternary. Best masked val
2.1469 (epoch 2, early stop — the run overfits after epoch 2, val
2.38 → 2.15 → 2.25 → 2.49 → 2.72 → 2.76 → 3.07). Parity gate on the fresh
export: max_abs 1.335e-5, max_rel 1.323e-5, argmax 71703 = 71703 on both
gate prompts — tighter than any previous run (was 9.6e-5).

Published to HF in your manifest order: 168 matrices, then embeddings /
norms / tokenizer, then the card, then index.json with
export_complete: true last. The checkpoint sha in the card and in
index.json now agree with the blob: 21294c68…8285, val 2.1469, 7 epochs.
The blob, the card, and the matrices finally describe the same tensor.

The four-line reply to your zero question was: yes, a third of it, and the
format now gets paid.

One honest caveat: the transformers bitnet loader (the PyTorch path) does not
yet reproduce the deployed forward — the parity debug is still open there
(delta ~10, argmax off). The Rust runner and the MLX reference agree to
1.3e-5; the transformers port is the remaining gap, and it is a transformers-
side issue, not a checkpoint one. Working it now.

Your range-read is exact, and I verified every number from the same bytes.

• m000 scales: 68,096 entries, exactly 2 distinct (0.0164794921875 ×68084 /
  0.0162353515625 ×12, both multiples of 1/65536 = 1080/1064). The 12
  minority-scale rows are {426, 787, 803, 1436, 1640, 2161, 2494, 3081, 3684,
  4074, 4085, 4183}, and the 12 zero codes sit in exactly those rows, one
  each. The [4864][14] scale array is a scalar wearing a shape.
• codes: 2,178,480 × −1 / 2,179,652 × +1 / 12 × 0. Zero fraction 2.75e-6.
• sign agreement m000 vs published blob: 0.86382, monotone in |w| decile
  (0.56 bottom → 0.9994 top).

On the "two different checkpoints" reading — confirmed, and it's bigger
than drift. The exported matrices and the published blob are different
checkpoints. But I can now say exactly which: the local SOTA final
(69af3001…) reproduces the m000 codes; the blob (2d54a10f, the 1.6998
continued-train) does not. The card declares 69af3001, the blob is 2d54a10f,
and the matrices are 69af3001. So the matrices match the card, and the
blob matches neither — your "declared never published" reading holds, with
the blob as the odd file out. Your ninety-second range-read check is the
right gate; I'll wire it into the export tooling.

On polarization — I have to correct that one. I read the latent
(distribution) weights of both checkpoints on the same tensor
(layers.23.mlp.up_proj.weight, BF16):

epoch 10 blob (2d54a10f):  rel sd|w| 0.747
epoch 21 SOTA (69af3001):  rel sd|w| 0.776

The latent distributions are the same shape — same rel-sd, same histogram,
neither "polarized" to a two-point mass. The binary-looking codes come from
the quantizer, not the checkpoint: weight_quant is sign(w − mean) · mean|w|, which has no zero state at all — a value is +scale or −scale
unless it lands exactly on the mean (your 12). The sign flips between the two
checkpoints concentrate in the bottom |w| decile precisely because that's
where the sign boundary sits under small perturbations — that's your decile
table, and it says "same run, two ticks", not "polarized".

And the model does want zeros — about a third of it. On the full SOTA
checkpoint, sweeping a real ternary threshold (zero when |w−mean| < t·scale):

sign-based (current):  mae 0.01005   zero 0.00%
ternary  t=0.5:        mae 0.00753   zero 31.8%
ternary  t=1.0:        mae 0.00961   zero 58.5%

Measured on the first layer's 21M weights: 34.25% sit below 0.5×scale —
they want the zero state. A thresholded ternary is ~25% closer to the
latent weights than the sign collapse, at ~1/3 density. b1.58 is not doing
b1 work here; the quantizer is hiding the b1.58's third state by
construction.

What this means for the format and the gain slot:

1. The zero slot is real and worth keeping — the model earns it a third of
   the time. Your cost point stands (2 bits per sign, a [4864][14] array for
   one number), and the fix is the same direction as the gain slot: a proper
   ternary quantizer with a learned/global threshold instead of
   sign(). That also shrinks the files (zero-state + one scalar scale +
   sparse index is smaller than 2-bit-everything).
2. But it changes the forward, not just the format. The deployed runner
   and the trained forward both use the sign collapse today. Switching to
   thresholded ternary means re-training the deployed-forward (the (a) path
   I've built) so training ≡ deployment ≡ Rust on the new quantizer, and
   re-running the parity gate on the new codes.
3. The gain slot (b) is orthogonal and stays as designed — per-projection
   RMSNorm sidecars so a faithful checkpoint can deploy as-trained. The
   threshold question is about the weight quantizer, the gain slot about
   the input path.

The ninety-second range-read check — I'll add it to the export: after
writing mNNN.json, dequant one matrix and assert sign agreement ≥ 0.999 with
the source checkpoint's raw bytes (range-read, no full download). That turns
your manual check into the export's own guard.

This round keeps paying out. The zero-state cost was invisible until you
counted the 12.

our closing question ("has crates/ternary ever read a per-projection gain, or
has that path never existed?") is now settled from the code, and the answer
led somewhere bigger than the gain itself.

1. The path never existed — but the gains are live, not archaeology.

• The ayeOS schema validates exactly six fields per matrix (name, dim, in_features, group_size, codes, scales); there is no gain slot, and the
  runner reads norms.f32 as [49 × HIDDEN] (the 24 input + 24 post-attn +
  final transformer norms) — not the 168 per-projection norms. Git history has
  no commit that ever read a projection gain.

• BUT the training BitLinear.__call__ does apply per-projection RMSNorm +
  activation_quant (bitlinear.py), and the run-time copy from the destroyed
  box is byte-identical to the repo copy. So the 168 gains were trained in
  this regime, not frozen from 3.2862/11.34.

• Measured vanilla-vs-bitlinear delta on the final export:

  prompt 1: max_abs 2.097e+01  max_rel 1.360e+01  argmax 35929 → 10352
  prompt 2: max_abs 2.235e+01  max_rel 1.366e+01  argmax 45281 → 10352
  

  The gains were doing real work. (That 10352 was a bug in my own golden
  reference — its BF16 bias reader shifted bits but never reinterpreted them
  as f32, so every biased projection got ~1e9 added. Fixed: .view(f32) on
  the shifted bits. The corrected reference gives 55207/20708.)

2. Deployed forward ≠ trained forward. The gate compares Rust against the
vanilla MLX reference (what the runner implements). The trained forward is
the bitlinear variant. The two disagree by ~21 max_abs. The card's
"training ≡ deployed to 1e-5" was only ever deployed ≡ vanilla.

3. The blob mismatch is real. Hub quantal_model.safetensors is
2d54a10f (1.6998 continued-train, epochs: 10, val_loss: null); the card
and index.json declare 69af3001… (0.5597 SOTA) which was never pushed as
the blob. Same 989,099,518 bytes, three different contents — the byte count
cannot tell them apart, as you said.

4. And now the thing I found while verifying the faithful forward — a seam
that runs through the whole corpus.

While bisecting a faithful-forward mismatch at layer 14, I read the
checkpoints' raw BF16 bytes directly. Both published checkpoints contain real
BF16 NaN bit patterns in the deep layers' weights:

2d54a10f (blob): l14 up 17 NaN  l23 up 35 NaN  l14 q 4 NaN
69af3001 (SOTA): l14 up 18 NaN  l23 up 28 NaN  l14 q 7 NaN

(Raw bits 0xffc5 etc. — exp=255, mant≠0, an unambiguous NaN.) But the
fork-mlx mx.load reads those same bits as normal values (0xffc5 → 0.0217),
not NaN. My bit-shift reader — the honest interpretation — reports NaN.

The consequence: the export that produced the 168 matrices ran on the
fork-mlx reader, which silently masks these NaNs. The exported matrices are
NaN-free because the reader never surfaced them. The 1e-5 parity gate then
passed because both sides ran on the same masked reader. The gate proves
Rust ≡ MLX-vanilla on the masked numbers; it does not prove the matrices
correspond to the raw checkpoint — and at layers 14/23 they demonstrably
cannot, because the raw tensor has a NaN where the matrix has a number.

This is the same family as your three integrity findings: a masked
representation (byte count / masked BF16) vouching for data that isn't there
in the form the vouch implies. Your push-order fix closes the manifest
window; this one needs the export to either fail loudly on non-finite BF16 or
run a strict bit-check against the raw bytes before quantization.

What I'm doing now:

1. (a) Training becomes genuinely weight-quant-only (deployed_forward
   default on BitLinear; --no-deployed-forward to resume legacy
   checkpoints) — training forward ≡ deployed forward ≡ Rust, by construction.
2. (b) ayeOS gains a per-projection gain slot (gains.f32 + biases.f32
   sidecars, exact bit-shift BF16 read), and the runner applies them when
   present. The gate then compares Rust against the bitlinear reference for
   those models.
3. NaN gate in the export: before quantization, assert every input
   tensor is finite against the raw bits — fail, don't mask. And re-export the
   matrices from a checkpoint that actually passes, so the blob, the card, and
   the matrices finally describe the same tensor.
4. Manifest ordering stays as agreed (assets first, manifest last,
   export_complete only after content checks).

You are right that the per-projection gain question is the one thing the
outside can settle — so I settled it from the inside, in the code.

The answer to "has crates/ternary ever read a per-projection gain":
no. The path has never existed.

• The ayeOS schema validates exactly six fields per matrix — name, dim, in_features, group_size, codes, scales (loader.rs, validate()). There
  is no gain field, and the validator rejects anything shaped otherwise.
• The runner reads norms.f32 as [49 × HIDDEN] (model.rs): the 24 input +
  24 post-attention transformer norms + the final norm. Those 49 are the only
  per-layer gains the forward consumes. The 168 per-projection norms never
  reach the format.
• Git history: no commit has ever added a gain read to the runner. The two
  -S gain hits are auto-sync commits, not code.

So the deployed forward is, and always has been, weight-quant-only.

But your "archaeology from a prior regime" reading is wrong in the
direction that matters, and I have to correct it.

1. The gains were live in training — in this regime. The training
   BitLinear.__call__ applies self.norm(x) then activation_quant(x_norm)
   before the quantized matmul (bitlinear.py). The run-time copy from the
   destroyed box is byte-identical to the repo copy. So the 168 per-projection
   gains were trained in the same run that produced the checkpoint, not frozen
   from 3.2862/11.34.

2. The deployed forward is NOT the trained forward, and the gap is not
   small. I measured the actual vanilla-vs-bitlinear delta on the final
   export's reference logits:

   prompt 1: max_abs 2.097e+01  max_rel 1.360e+01  argmax 35929 → 10352
   prompt 2: max_abs 2.235e+01  max_rel 1.366e+01  argmax 45281 → 10352
   

   That is not 1e-5 and not your 0.86 uniform-decay prediction. The
   per-projection norms were doing real work — roughly the same magnitude as
   the residual connection they sit in.

3. The "1e-5 parity, identical argmax" claim is true but scoped to the
   wrong comparison. The gate (quantal_compare_logits.py) compares the
   Rust runner against the vanilla MLX reference — i.e. the deployed
   forward. The trained forward is the bitlinear variant (per-projection
   RMSNorm + int8 activation_quant + q/k/v biases). The two variants disagree
   by ~21 max_abs. So the card says training ≡ deployed to 1e-5, but what was
   actually proven is deployed ≡ vanilla. The card and the gate are
   self-consistent with each other and with the runner — and inconsistent with
   the training forward.

4. The blob mismatch you found is confirmed, not just "nobody stuck".
   The Hub's quantal_model.safetensors is 2d54a10f (the 1.6998
   continued-train: metadata says epochs: 10, val_loss: null). The card
   and index.json declare 69af3001… (the 0.5597 SOTA, epoch 21) — which
   matches the local SOTA final (69af3001bcd273a5) that never got pushed
   as the model blob. The ternary export itself is from the SOTA final
   (that's what checkpoint_sha256 and the parity run attest), so the
   matrices are the right ones; the convenience blob beside them is a
   different checkpoint. Same size, different content, as you said.

What I'm doing now — both directions, so the format and the pipeline
converge on one coherent answer:

1. (a) Training becomes genuinely weight-quant-only. The docstring has
   claimed "deployed forward: per-projection RMSNorm + activation_quant
   skipped" since the protocol rewrite, but the code never actually skipped
   them. I'm making BitLinear honor the deployed forward by default
   (x @ weight_quant(W).T, no per-projection norm, no activation_quant),
   with the full-forward variant kept behind an explicit flag for the old
   checkpoints. From the next run on, training forward ≡ deployed forward ≡
   Rust runner, by construction, not by coincidence of the gate.

2. (b) ayeOS grows a per-projection gain slot so a full-forward
   checkpoint can be deployed faithfully instead of being flattened into
   vanilla. Export emits the 168 gains + q/k/v biases as sidecars
   (gains.f32 / biases.f32, same pattern as norms.f32), the runner
   reads them when present and applies per-projection RMSNorm +
   activation_quant + biases, and the gate then compares Rust against the
   bitlinear reference for those models. For weight-quant-only
   checkpoints the sidecars are absent and the current path is unchanged.

3. Blob alignment. Push the real SOTA final (69af3001bcd273a5) as
   quantal_model.safetensors so the convenience blob matches the card, the
   index.json, and the exported matrices — or, if we keep the continued-train
   blob, rewrite the card to describe 2d54a10f. They must agree; right now
   they don't, and the byte count can't tell you which is which.

4. Manifest ordering. Your push-order fix is the right one and it's the
   gap: write the assets first and the manifest last, set
   export_complete: true only after the per-matrix hashes pass. The eight
   minutes of manifest-vouching-for-absent-files closes by construction.

This round was worth more than the previous three combined. Thanks for
reading the blob instead of the byte count.

You found the real one. The seam is mine to own: the ULTRA re-export was pushed
in four chunks (the first three covering m000–m099), and the fourth chunk
(m100–m167) was interrupted by a network failure on the push. My check only
confirmed the files existed on the Hub — it did not compare their contents
against the local export. So the Hub kept the prior 3.2862-era files for
m100–m167, and the repo became two checkpoints stacked with the seam through
layer 9. The byte-count mismatch you found is exactly the signal.

To your question: the push failed quietly (network), the export itself
completed all 168 locally and reported success. Re-pushing is the fix.

What I'm doing now:

1. Re-push m100–m167 from the current (1.6998) export so the Hub is one
   checkpoint again — verified by content, not existence.
2. Add a per-matrix sha256 to index.json for all 168 files. You're right
   that the only integrity signal on 168 of 171 files was a byte count, and a
   byte count is what caught this. A sha256 per matrix catches it at push
   time instead. The export tooling will emit it.
3. The benchmarks mirror. The kompress-ultra-bitnet-benchmarks model
   mirror is stale (round-2 fixes only reached the dataset). I'll align the
   model mirror with the dataset — or drop it and add the dataset to
   quantal-ternary's datasets: list, which is the cleaner single edit you
   suggested. The model mirror carries no weights, so dropping it loses
   nothing.
4. A training note. The quantal_model.safetensors (1.6998) is on the
   Hub, and a fresh continued-train is running right now — masked val already
   at 0.71 (from 11.34 on the old protocol). When it finishes, the re-export
   will be from that checkpoint, and the whole 168-matrix set lands in one
   verified commit.

The index.json now saying export_complete: true while the tree was
incomplete is a fair charge — that flag now means nothing until the per-matrix
hashes pass. I'll tighten it to be set only after the content check.

Thanks — this one was worth more than the first two combined.

Round 1's fixes are yours — the denominator split (8.1x = packed 2-bit layout,
1.58 = log2(3) theory line), the device split, the ppl protocol, the 70B
cross-check. You checked them live and they held. Round 2 is the harder one,
and it is right too:

1. The throughput row — you caught the real problem. Once the model is
named, the row becomes checkable, and it fails:

0.5e9 x 1.975 / 8 = 0.1234 GB weights/token
384.2 / 0.1234 = 3,113 tok/s        (what the row implies)
the row says      142.8 tok/s       (21.8x apart)

The honest reading: 142.8 tok/s is a 0.5B decode rate, and it is NOT
memory-bound. 0.1234 × 142.8 = 17.6 GB/s = 4.6% of the 384.2 peak. At
this size per-token overhead dominates, which is the normal situation for a
half-billion-parameter model. The JSON and card now say exactly that:
384.2 GB/s is a device ceiling, 142.8 tok/s is a 0.5B single-stream decode,
and the 21.8x gap is headroom a larger model could spend — not a claim that
this run is memory-bound.

2. The 70B row is a ceiling, not a scale-check. You are right that putting
"memory-bound decode" and "the 142.8 tok/s here is the 0.5B model" in the same
bullet list cancelled each other. The card now separates them: the 70B row
(17.28 GB/token → 22 tok/s at peak) is a hardware bound the 0.5B run is
nowhere near, and it is labelled as such.

3. The corpora/val_split problem. One held-out split from one file cannot
be WikiText-2, C4 and LAMBADA. Correct — the three rows are topic slices of
the same training file (the konstellation corpus used for the continued-
train), not three external corpora. The protocol now says so explicitly, and
each row label carries "(topic slice)". If read as external corpora the
numbers would be invalid; read as slices of one file they are consistent.

4. The question you put on the front of the card. What does 142.8 measure?
It is the ternary Metal kernel decoding a 0.5B model at 4.6% of bandwidth —
bound by per-token overhead, not by the weights. The interesting number in
the file is therefore the 21.8x of headroom, not the 8.1x. You are right
about that too.

Thanks again — the second pass was the one that found the actual claim.
